Making the Past Indestructible

Making something true has always been expensive. Making something sound true just became free.


That is the whole situation. Everything else follows.

For as long as there have been records, a statement carried weight because producing it cost something: a person’s time, a person’s name, a person who could be found and asked. Remove that cost and you do not get more truth. You get statements that are no longer evidence of anything.

So the scarce thing is no longer information. Anyone can make information now, in any quantity, in any voice. The scarce thing is evidence that a particular event occurred.

Now look at what civilisation actually pays for.

The notary. The land registry. The patent office. The clearing house. The auditor. The court. Ask what any of them is for and you get the same answer in different clothes: what happened, and when. Who signed first. Who filed first. Who was told first. Who breached first. Strip away the buildings and the fees, and every institution of trust we have is a machine for answering one question.

They answer it by being believed.

That is why they must be paid. That is why they can be captured. And that is why the answer costs more the more it matters.

A record can answer the same question by being checkable instead.


Which raises the only question that matters, and almost nobody asks it. A record is worth exactly its irreversibility. So: irreversible with respect to what?

Not to God. Not to mathematics. To someone who must spend physical work to reach the material that would let them undo it. Say that out loud and the room becomes very small, because there are only two ways to stop them.

Make the work unaffordable. The material is still there; reaching it costs more energy than they have. This is hash preimage resistance. This is proof-of-work. It is an economic wall, and it stands exactly as long as their budget stays under the threshold.

Or make the material absent before they arrive. Not expensive to reach. Gone. You win a race, and afterwards there is nothing to buy.

There is no third way.

People think there are three: work, destruction, and agreement. Agreement is not a mechanism. A blockchain’s past is irreversible only because rewriting it costs energy. Take away the cost and consensus is a vote, and votes can be held again. Consensus is bookkeeping on top of the first wall, not an alternative to it.

That is a far heavier statement than we are not a blockchain. It says there was never anywhere else to stand.

And the first wall has a price nobody prints on the box. Its security is denominated in the attacker’s budget. Bitcoin’s security is denominated in Bitcoin’s price. A fiat chain cannot escape that coupling except by appointing a board of validators, which is a polite word for power. Every system built this way inherits the same fate: a richer adversary erodes it continuously, and security becomes a market variable.

That wall held while adversaries were merely rich. Three things now stand against it, and they are arriving together.

Budget stopped being a proxy for capability. It was a good proxy while capability had to be purchased. Machines that reason now locate in hours the weaknesses that funded teams once spent years to find, and the price of finding them falls every month. Attestation keys have been extracted from production security silicon using under a thousand dollars of equipment. A wall priced in computation cannot be held against the thing that computes best. To trust it, you must require your adversary to stay poor, and then to stay slow.

The second failure was proved in a different room. In 2026 the Federal Reserve published a study of digital money showing that where settlement must be paid for, its price rises precisely when everyone needs it at once, and that this rise is what converts caution into panic. The finding is not about money. It is the general property of every wall that is bought: protection which must be purchased is cheapest when no one needs it and dearest at the moment of maximum need. An economic wall fails on the day it matters.

The third is volume, and it is not human. Machines are beginning to take actions that cannot be taken back, in quantities no institution was built to review and at speeds no reviewer can match. Their reasoning cannot be inspected, and this is not a limit of current tools: whatever two systems can do identically from the outside, no outside test can ever tell apart. They can therefore be governed only by their effects, which is to say only by their record. A record defended by out-computing the thing it records is not a defence.

The second wall is denominated in nothing that can be bought. You cannot outspend the non-existence of a thing. You would have to beat physics instead of outbidding a market.

It has one requirement, and it is where we should be attacked. Destroying something only makes it irreversible if it could not have been made twice. If the value can be recomputed from public inputs, a seed, an algorithm, a state anyone can rerun, then burning your copy achieves nothing. Nobody needed to steal it. They can make it again.

In software you can destroy your copy. You cannot make the thing unrepeatable.

We say that out loud, because it is the sentence that explains what the hardware is for.


Consider what a clock is.

Every clock humanity has built is an oscillator and a counter. Pendulum, quartz, cesium: something swings, and we count the swings. But an oscillation is time-symmetric. Played backwards, a pendulum looks identical. The arrow is not in the mechanism. Physics puts the arrow of time in exactly one place, entropy increase, and no clock we have ever built contains it. Every clock measures duration while borrowing its direction from somewhere else.

And the counter, the part that remembers what time it is, is a register. Editable. Every digital clock ever made can be set back.

Which means they were never really clocks. They were watches: devices that report time without committing to it.

Ours ticks differently. Each tick consumes an unrepeatable physical event and chains it to the last one. The direction is not displayed, it is enforced. There is no operation, at any privilege, that runs it backwards, because the material that would let you re-strike a tick no longer exists. Before and after stop being stored values and become thermodynamic facts.

Not a better chronometer. A chronograph in the literal sense: not a time-measurer, a time-writer.

Hash-linked timestamping already wrote time into a digital record, and did it well, thirty-five years ago. But it wrote computationally, with no arrow of its own, and its irreversibility is the first wall, priced in an attacker’s budget. What this adds is the thing that defines time in physics: an entropic event per tick.

Every digital clock until now told the time. This is the first one that keeps it.


Now open the seal and look at what is inside.

Four fields go in. The tip of the chain before this one, a claim about history. The hash of the payload, a claim about content. The nanosecond, a claim about time. And a fingerprint.

Three of those can be false. The fourth cannot be anything.

It makes no assertion. It is not about the world; it is a piece of what happened. It has no truth-value at all. It cannot lie. It can only be irrelevant.

A signature is a claim. A fossil is not.

Signatures can be forged, because a signature says something, I was here, and everything that says something can be said falsely. A fossil says nothing. It is not testimony about an animal. It is what is left of one. You cannot forge a fossil by lying better. You would have to produce the animal.

Every security system ever built tried to make claims harder to falsify. This one puts something that is not a claim inside the claim.

We built the whole thing around the one field that cannot lie.


There is a reason that fourth field behaves unlike everything else in a computer.

Every digital object has a recipe. Give me the program and the inputs and I regenerate the bytes exactly: every file, every key, every random number drawn from software. All of them are made, and whatever is made can be made again. This one was not made. It happened. Its cause sits outside the digital world entirely, in a measurement no one chose, that was never at any address, and that ceased to exist before the receipt could be read.

Which is why the fossil was never a metaphor. A fossil is ordinary rock: copyable, castable, photographable. What cannot be copied is having been the animal. The bytes are the rock. The origination is the animal.

We sell the animal.

And there is a consequence here that belongs to no other system of trust. What was never possessed cannot be surrendered. A court can order the production of a key and the order will be obeyed, because the key exists somewhere and someone holds it. Nothing here can be produced under any order, from any authority, at any level of the world, because the material was consumed at the instant of its use. The operator is not trusted to refuse. The operator is unable to comply.


Follow that down and it does not stop at engineering.

Irreversibility is the only thing in the physical world that cannot be addressed, because it is everywhere. We cannot name it. We can only experience it, now.

Augustine, sixteen centuries ago: what is time? If no one asks me, I know. If I try to explain it, I do not know. Einstein, near the end of his life, told Carnap that the experience of the now troubled him: that it means something essentially different from past and future, and that this difference does not and cannot occur within physics.

The now is the one thing in the universe that cannot be given an address. Not because it is hidden. Because it is everywhere. An address is a way of pointing at one thing among others, and irreversibility is not among the things. It is the condition of there being things at all.

And notice precisely why it cannot be named. A name is an address in language, a handle you can use again tomorrow to refer to the same thing. Reference is repetition. The now is the one thing that never repeats. The unrepeatable cannot be referred to. It can only be inherited.

This is where the machine enters, and where it stays physics rather than mysticism. In quantum mechanics, measurement has a precise meaning: the irreversible registration of an event, the moment a possibility becomes a fact and cannot be unbecome. That is what experiencing the now is, stripped of poetry. So the device does not name the present. Nothing can. It does the only thing that can be done with a present: it lets it leave a mark, and it keeps the mark. The receipt is not a description of the moment. Descriptions are addressable, repeatable, forgeable. It is a consequence of the moment, and consequences are the only form in which the present survives itself.

In the digital world, everything has an address except that fingerprint’s origin. In the physical world, everything has an address except irreversibility itself.

The two worlds share exactly one orphan. We built the door between them.


Which tells you what is left to sell.

Every marketplace in history sold introductions. The agora, the classifieds, the search engine, the feed: all the same trade. We know both sides, and you pay us to be seen. That was always rent charged on your inability to search everything. Your AI just ended that inability. Introductions are free now, and they are free forever.

What remains is the only thing that cannot be free: proof that they happened. One cent. Not the price of being seen. The price of being on the record.

And there is nothing else here to sell. No feed to be placed in. No position anyone can buy. We are not selling attention. We are selling the thing attention was always a poor substitute for.

Someone will object that physical unrepeatability will itself get cheap, that the diode costs twenty euros, that everyone will have one. They are right, and it changes nothing. When anyone can mint a fossil, the fossil stops being the scarce thing and the stratum becomes it. The bone does not date the fossil. The layer does. Everyone will be able to make bones. Nobody can make strata, because sediment is by definition the thing that takes time.

The same answer holds against better machines, not only cheaper ones. Something will eventually mint unrepeatable events more elegantly than this device does; that is what happens to instruments. But no instrument arrives carrying a past. It begins on the day it is switched on, and anything it needs to say about what came before must anchor to a record already older than itself. That record has to have been kept by someone who started earlier, without knowing who would need it.

That is where the regress ends. It cannot go deeper, because forgery is itself an event, and events occur in time. Every earlier scarcity was a scarcity of means. The last one is a scarcity of when, and the universe enforces it without being paid.


None of this makes anything true. A receipt proves that something was said, and when. Whether it is true remains the world’s business, as it always was.

We renounce the impossible in the first breath and claim only the residue. That is not modesty of style. It is the security model, spoken aloud.


The oldest thing in this argument is also the newest.

The first name that survives in the human record is Kushim, on a clay tablet from Uruk, five thousand years old. It reads, roughly: 29,086 measures of barley. 37 months. Kushim.

A receipt.

Writing was invented for receipts. Literature, law and history are its side effects. Civilisation did not begin with a poem. It began with someone keeping count.

And here is the part that settles the argument. Scholars still dispute whether Kushim was a man or an office, whether that word names a person or a role. Five thousand years on, the claim has decayed past recovery. The quantity has not. The duration has not. The record outlived the thing it was about.

That is the whole company, written down before anyone could read.
